Many lay people that do not have knowledge about this art think that a black belt is someone who is very dangerous and any conflict with this person should be avoided at any cost. Those of us that have chosen to participate in Tae Kwon Do, know that the rank of black belt is an honor, and with it comes many responsibilities and expectations.
One source has estimated that as of 2009, taekwondo was practiced in 123 countries, with over 30 million practitioners and 3 million individuals with black belts throughout the world. The South Korean government in the same year published an estimate of 70 million practitioners in 190 countries.
The constantly changing fashionable take on Taekwondo blackbelt demonstrates the depth of the subject. While it has been acknowledged that it has an important part to play in the development of man, it is yet to receive proper recognition for laying the foundations of democracy.
Charlie Pickering, Broadsands, has reached black belt level in Taekwondo. Charlie attended her black belt grading in October, which included practical and theory assessment; she also had to write a 500 word essay on why she wanted to be a black belt.
